Work Package 1 – State of the Art Analysis

WP1 “State of the Art Analysis” established a fundamental understanding of smart industrial tourism (SMIT) within the partner regions. This comprehensive assessment of SMIT potential involved a detailed examination of existing tourism systems, developed in the first year of project implementation in three different areas of activity:

Activity 1.1Tourism Systems in the Partner Regions

The activity was carried out by all partners through research, study, and collection of useful materials to draw a comprehensive overview of the industrial tourism landscape, based on data from a survey of industrial tourism sites and an analysis of the state of industrial tourism in the six European countries or regions involved, seeking to identify best practices and highlight the main challenges and opportunities for future development.

  • Deliverable D1.1.1 “Baseline study of tourism systems in the partner regions”
A detailed overview of the state of the art of tourism in the partner regions that maps the material and immaterial assets that can be exploited by the partners to develop Smart Industrial Tourism in their regions.

  • Output 1.1 SWOT analysis of Smart Industrial Tourism in the Mediterranean

A Transnational SWOT analysis of Smart Industrial Tourism (SMIT) in the Mediterranean. It synthesizes baseline studies, Good Practices (GPs), and advanced technologies from seven partner organizations to identify key drivers, hindrances, potentialities, and criticalities for SMIT development in the region.

Activity 1.2 – Industrial Tourism Practices in the Mediterranean

Given that the Mediterranean region holds a rich industrial history and that industrial tourism is becoming an increasingly popular way to experience and learn about this heritage, the main purpose of this activity was to catalog innovative and different approaches to industrial tourism within the Mediterranean project partners territories aimed at promoting local heritage while enriching the visitor experience.

  • Deliverable D1.2.1 “Catalogue of Industrial Tourism Practices”
A picture of the state of the art of Industrial Tourism Practices in the partner regions covering a significant number of Good Practices either in Industrial Tourism, or that have a bearing on Industrial Tourism.

Activity 1.3 – Application of Advanced Technologies in the Tourism Sector

The activity aimed to research and study the current situation of the application of advanced technologies in industrial tourism in the project partner countries as part of the Mediterranean area, trying to identify best practices and highlight the main challenges and opportunities for future development.

  • Deliverable D1.3.1 “Catalogue of Advanced Technologies Applications for Tourism”
An organic catalogue of cutting edge applications of advanced and immersive technologies for Tourism, covering the entire Mediterranean area.

Work Package 2 –Smart Industrial Tourism development strategy and Action Plan for the Mediterranean regions

Building on the knowledge base developed in WP1, this Work Package co-designed a transnational Smart Industrial Tourism (SMIT) strategy and Action Plan for the Mediterranean regions. Through an Entrepreneurial Discovery Process (EDP), 4-helix stakeholders — including public authorities, SMEs, Cultural and Creative Industries, technology providers, and local communities — were engaged to collectively identify key development priorities. Thematic Innovation Camps brought together transnational Focus and Working Groups (FWGs) to tackle specific tourism innovation challenges, fostering cross-border dialogue and co-creation across the Med area.

Activity 2.3 – Strategy co-design

The activity built on the outcomes of the Innovation Camps to develop a common strategy for Smart Industrial Tourism in the Mediterranean regions. The roadmaps produced by the working groups were brought together and elaborated into a shared framework, identifying the actions, actors and resources needed to support long-term tourism innovation.

The strategy was then assessed by the stakeholders involved in the process and translated into a concrete Action Plan, providing regional and local public authorities with clear guidance on the steps needed to develop Smart Industrial Tourism in their territories.

Output 2.1“Common Strategy for the development of Smart Industrial Tourism in the Mediterranean”

This document defines the SMIT Strategy, a Mediterranean action plan for the SMITour project to revitalize industrial heritage through digital innovation and sustainability. It establishes a transnational governance model to drive urban regeneration and create accessible, immersive tourism experiences.

Output 2.2 – “Action Plan for developing Smart Industrial Tourism in the Mediterranean”

This document serves as the operational roadmap to implement Smart Industrial Tourism in the Mediterranean between 2026 and 2030. It translates strategic vision into over 40 concrete actions across 13 key areas, guiding public authorities and businesses toward sustainable economic growth and heritage revitalization.

Work Package 3 – Result amplification and mainstreaming

This Work Package focused on scaling the project’s impact by integrating the SMIT Common Strategy and Action Plan into Mediterranean tourism policies. By shifting from activity-based communication to result-driven advocacy, WP3 established a unified demonstration methodology and ensured that national, regional, and local decision-makers adopted SMITour’s innovative solutions for sustainable industrial heritage.

Activity 3.3 – Building the testing roadmap

This activity created a clear roadmap and a shared method to launch industrial tourism in Mediterranean districts. Partners defined how to test new tools, engage local communities, and select practical solutions ready for use. Finally, a large conference was organized to present these results to policy makers, businesses, researchers, and citizens.

Output 3.1“Testing roadmap for developing Smart Industrial Tourism in the Mediterranean”

This document provides the operational blueprint for implementing Smart Industrial Tourism across the Mediterranean. It translates the project’s strategic vision into concrete, measurable actions, offering the methods and tools needed to test and scale sustainable tourism solutions. By addressing challenges like funding and infrastructure, the document guides local and international partners in turning industrial heritage into a global leader for innovation.
