19/09/2024

On September 27, 2024, Tbilisi, Georgia will host the official celebrations of World Tourism Day, bringing together nearly 500 participants from 51 different countries. This year’s theme, “Tourism and Peace,” emphasizes the vital role that tourism plays in fostering international understanding and cultural exchange amidst a world marked by geopolitical tensions.

High-level ministerial dialogues will focus on building bridges through tourism. Participants will explore strategies to leverage tourism as a tool for fostering global unity and understanding. The discussions aim to address the challenges posed by disinformation and mistrust while emphasizing equitable benefits from tourism across societies.

In addition to public sector discussions, the event will also feature insights from private sector leaders who play a crucial role in promoting peaceful interactions through tourism. The dialogue will explore how businesses can collaborate with governments to create opportunities that foster stability and resilience in emerging destinations.

The day aims not only to celebrate the contributions of tourism but also to examine the convergence of tourism and peacebuilding, emphasizing how travel, cultural exchange, and sustainable tourism practices can foster conflict resolution, reconciliation, and the advancement of global peace.

World Tourism Day is an annual event celebrated on September 27th, initiated by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to underscore the significance of tourism and its multifaceted contributions to society, culture, politics, and the economy. This day aims to promote responsible and sustainable tourism while fostering global awareness and appreciation for the cultural heritage and diversity that tourism brings. The choice of September 27th commemorates the anniversary of the UNWTO Statutes adoption in 1970, marking a pivotal moment in recognizing tourism as a critical global sector.
